Regulator Outlines Hong Kong Agenda
Washington, DC, February 7, 2005 – Alexa Lam, Executive Director of the Intermediaries and Investment Products Division of the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC), recently outlined the Hong Kong regulator’s agenda in a speech at the Institute’s Mutual Funds and Investment Management in Asia Conference.
Specifically, Lam discussed the SFC’s focus on:
- greater regulatory cooperation with the China Securities Regulatory Commission;
- the impact the new UCITS Directive may have on the fund industry in Hong Kong; and
- allowing real estate investment trusts (REITs) to operate in Hong Kong in order to diversify into overseas properties.
“Our challenge is to work towards fine-tuning Hong Kong’s regulatory framework to accommodate the unique characteristics of China’s financial markets without compromising investor protection,” said Lam.
