ICI to Convene Annual General Membership Meeting May 6–8
Agenda Features SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro and U.S. Bancorp’s Richard Davis

Washington, DC, April 16, 2009 - The mutual fund industry will gather for ICI’s Annual General Membership Meeting May 6 – 8 in Washington, D.C to discuss market and fund industry developments in these challenging times. Prominent government, industry and Wall Street leaders will present their perspectives on how the business environment is changing and what that means for regulation and the future of the fund industry.  This year’s conference theme is “Extraordinary Times—Steadfast Commitment.”

SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro will address the mutual fund industry for the first time since assuming her new position, on Friday May 8 at a breakfast session, sharing her views on the current developments and providing an update on her agency’s agenda.  In addition, U.S. Bancorp Chairman, President & CEO Richard Davis will deliver a keynote address Thursday discussing the reasons that the current financial crisis  makes this a critical time for public and private sector leadership in America. 

Highlighting once-in-a-generation issues of broad interest for the business community at large, the conference will also feature remarks by Neil Howe, the author of The Graying of the Great Powers and a senior associate, Center for Strategic and International Studies, and Michael Lewis, author of Moneyball and Liar’s Poker.

Wednesday, May 6

3:30 - 4:45 p.m. - Market Insights in a Time of Crisis

Martin Flanagan,  President & CEO of Invesco Ltd., will provide his unique global perspective as he moderates the panel discussion on the dynamics of the current market and their effects on the fund industry. Panelists are: James Anderson, Chief Investment Officer of Baillie Gifford (Scotland); Abby Joseph Cohen, Senior Investment Strategist & President of the Global Markets Institute at Goldman, Sachs & Co.; and Bill Miller, Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of Legg Mason Capital Management, Inc.

Thursday, May 7

9:00 - 10:00 a.m. - Leadership Panel: Our Steadfast Commitment

Paul Haaga, Vice Chairman of Capital Research and Management, will lead panelists in a discussion of how fund companies are rising to meet the challenges of the current economic environment . A key topic will be the way advisers lead their businesses and demonstrate their continuing commitment to investors. Panelists include: Edward Bernard, Vice Chairman of T. Rowe Price Group, Inc.; Mark Casady, Chairman & CEO of LPL Financial; Mark Fetting, CEO & President of Legg Mason, Inc.; and Robert Reynolds, President & CEO of Putnam Investments.

10:15 - 11:15 a.m. - Keynote Address

Richard Davis, Chairman, President & CEO, U.S. Bancorp
One of the most influential leaders of the financial services industry will share his thoughts on leadership in the present era. As part of this focus, he will highlight leadership as it pertains to the latest developments affecting the financial services and investment management industries .

2:15 - 3:15 p.m. - The Shape of Our Future

Moderated by John J. Brennan, Chairman of Vanguard, this panel will explore various proposals for a more effective framework for regulating the financial markets, the protection of investor interests, and new standards and regulation of money markets. Panelists include: Roger Ferguson, Jr., President and CEO of TIAA-CREF; James (Jes) Staley, CEO of  J.P. Morgan Asset Management; and ICI President and CEO Paul Schott Stevens.

Friday, May 8

7:30 - 8:30 a.m. - SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro: A Regulatory Update

SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro will provide an update on her agency’s agenda and elaborate on her views of current market developments, as well as issues in the securities and investment management industries.

8:45 - 10:00 a.m. - The Future of Retirement Savings

James Poterba will moderate a panel of experts on the political, legal, and regulatory currents and cross-currents influencing the future of retirement savings. Poterba is the Mitsui Professor of Economics at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology and president of the National Bureau of Economic Research. Topics the panel will explore include the adequacy of employee-directed savings programs in meeting retirement needs, workers’ management of their retirement account investments, and the role of advice in employee-directed savings plans.
