Coming Soon: More Detailed Data on Fund Trends

In the January 29, 2016, edition of Focus on Funds, ICI Senior Economist Shelly Antoniewicz highlights impending changes to ICI’s data offerings, including far more detailed data on flows into long-term mutual funds, and weekly data on exchange-traded funds.

Transcript

Stephanie Ortbals-Tibbs, Director, ICI Media Relations: New data on long-term fund flows and exchange-traded funds are coming from ICI. I spoke with Senior Economist Shelly Antoniewicz about what’s on the horizon.

Shelly Antoniewicz, ICI Senior Economist: We’re going to be expanding our weekly mutual fund release and so for fund flows we will be increasing the investment objectives that we show on the release. Finer detail, so that if you look at domestic equity, you will now be able to see flows into small-cap mutual funds, as well as large-cap, mid-cap, some other categories that we have as well. For international equity we’re going to separate out and show emerging market flows into emerging market equity mutual funds. Within our bond category, we are going to show high-yield domestic mutual funds, flows into those funds, as well into government bond mutual funds.

Ortbals-Tibbs: Shelly, this is really exciting news because ICI data are really kind of considered the standard setter.

Antoniewicz: Yes, our weekly data release covers nearly 100 percent of the industry and so when we put out our weekly fund flows they are extremely accurate and so I think that this will really help regulators, commentators, as well as any academics that are doing research on weekly fund flows.

Ortbals-Tibbs: Shelly, in addition to the new information that we’re offering on long-term fund flows, we’re also getting ready to release a lot more information on a weekly basis about ETFs.

Antoniewicz: The ETF industry has been growing, growing very rapidly, becoming a larger percentage of the assets within the registered fund space and so we wanted to grow with that as well. One hundred percent of the ETF industry reports to ICI and so we normally do just a monthly release, but now we feel that the time is right to put out a weekly release, and so we will be, within the next couple of months, be putting out a weekly release on ETF fund flows.
