Cybersecurity Push Increases, Goes Global

In the May 29, 2015, edition of Focus on Funds, ICI Senior Operations Director Peter Salmon outlines the latest cybersecurity resources from ICI, including a new global conference set for London in July 2015.

Transcript

Stephanie Ortbals-Tibbs, Director, ICI Media Relations: Welcome to Focus on Funds, the Investment Company Institute’s weekly roundup of industry news, ICI activities, and research findings.

Cybersecurity is an important issue for funds and their shareholders, and ICI’s Chief Information Officer Security Advisory Committee is playing an important role in helping the industry keep information safe. There’s a lot going on, as I recently learned in a conversation with ICI’s senior operations director, Peter Salmon.

Peter Salmon, Senior Director, Operations and Technology: They’ve been very busy. The main body of work that they’ve produced is an Information Security Resource Center that is broken up into four distinct sections. The first section provides links and descriptions to standards and guidelines that are pertinent to the industry; the second, to information sharing resources; the third, to threat mitigation and program development resources; and then the fourth section, which I think is particularly valuable, is a long list of questions that fund complexes can ask of their own security programs but also of third-party service providers.

Ortbals-Tibbs: That’s interesting, and also interesting is that you’re organizing a survey on this issue. What is that about?

Salmon: We’re putting together a survey that we hope to disseminate a little bit later this year. The goal of the survey is to benchmark the security practices of the industry to see how they evolve over time and also to better direct the efforts of the Chief Information Officer Security Advisory Committee.

Ortbals-Tibbs: So, Peter, knowing that this work is borderless, we’ve taken this work global within ICI. What has happened on that front?

Salmon: ICI Global has formed an Information Security Officer Committee, and we’re going to be hosting a one-day cybersecurity forum in London on July 14. It’s going to be comprised of panelists from law enforcement, security vendors, private security consultants, as well as our member firms. And it should have broad appeal.

Ortbals-Tibbs: And the takeaway from the discussion at the end of the day will be?

Salmon: Well, we hope to continue the discussion that our members have been having for quite some time, and share information about threats and mitigation strategies.

Ortbals-Tibbs: More information about the London conference is on the website. That’s this week in funds. See you next week.
